BEYOND THE HILLS
You don’t need to see Cristi Mungiu’s movie “Beyond the Hills” twice to notice the importance of the costumes, of the characters’s images. The fascinating contrast created almost instantly between the monachal clothes and the pure white of the moldavian snows becomes a character in inself, as loaded with tensions, concupiscence and mystical fervor like the caracthers themselves. The austerity of the black and white plans reveal a life lived on the edge of fantasy, where exorcizing sessions are as natural as peeling potatoes for lunch.
